It was first performed at La Fenice in Venice on March 11, 1851. It is considered by many to be the first of the operatic masterpieces of Verdi’s middle-to-late career. Marullo informs the noblemen that Rigoletto has a “lover”, and the noblemen cannot believe it. The noblemen resolve to take vengeance on Rigoletto. Subsequently Rigoletto mocks Count Monterone, whose daughter the Duke had seduced. Count Monterone is arrested at the Duke’s order and curses the Duke and Rigoletto. visit my website www.timbarsov.com Amapola is a popular song, written by Spanish composer Joseph LaCalle with Spanish lyrics although the English language lyrics were written by Albert Gamse. Though the song was published in 1924, the most popular recorded version was made nearly two decades later by the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra with vocalists Helen O’Connell and Bob Eberly. The record first reached the Billboard charts on March 14, 1941 and lasted 14 weeks on the chart, peaking at #1. Japanese singer Noriko Awaya also released her version of the song in 1937. Another version, with vocals in English, was recorded by Spike Jones and his City Slickers in the unforgettable comic style of his band. The flip-side was Jones Polka, a drinking-song, sung in a strong European accent. Amapola was also played during the Three Tenors concert in Rome in 1990. The song is also sung by Andrea Bocelli in his 2006 album Amore and by Paul Potts in his 2007 debut album One Chance. An instrumental version of the piece formed an important leitmotif in the gangster film Once Upon a Time in America (1984). From the Vault: Here’s another song that I had not intended to share. I did one take of this swinging version, based off of Frank Sinatra’s 1961 rendition, and for some reason aborted the project. This was recorded in April of 2010. It’s very raw, but felt that it had enough good to offer! “Granada” is a Mexican song written in 1932 by Agustín Lara. The song is about the Spanish city of Granada and has become a “standard” in music repertoire. The song has been covered many times throughout the years. Popular versions include those by Frankie Laine, Mario Lanza, Frank Sinatra, Luciano Pavorotti, Placido Domingo and, in German, by Fritz Wunderlich and Spanish pop-duo Baccara.
